Embedded Devices (System)

It is essential to know about the embedded devices for building the projects. The embedded devices are the objects that build the unique computing system. These systems may or may not connect to the Internet. A computer system that's designed to perform one or few dedicated functions usually with real-time computing constraints. It's embedded as a part of an entire device usually including hardware and mechanical parts. By contrast, a general-purpose computer, such as a personal computer (PC), It is designed to be flexible and to meet a wide range of end-user's needs.

The embedded system that uses the devices as operating system is completely based on the language platform, where the real-time operation would be performed. Manufacturers build embedded software in electronics, e.g., cars, telephones, modems, appliances, etc. The embedded system software can be as simple as lighting controls running using an 8-bit microcontroller. It can also be complicated software for missiles, process control systems etc.

Embedded systems control many devices in common use now a days. Embedded systems are controlled by one or more main processing cores that is typically either a microcontroller or digital signal processor (DSP). The key characteristic is however dedicated to handle a particular task, which can require very powerful processors. e.g. air traffic control systems, even though they involve mainframe computers and dedicated regional and national networks between airports and radar sites. (Each radar probably includes one or more embedded systems of its own.

The embedded system can be of type microcontroller or type microprocessor. Both of these types contain an integrated circuit (IC).

Since the embedded system is dedicated to specific task, design engineers can optimize it by reducing the size and cost of the product and increasing the reliability and performance. Some embedded systems are mass-produced, benefiting from economies of scale. Physically, embedded systems like portable devices such as digital watches and MP3 players, to large stationary installations like traffic lights, factory controllers, or the systems controlling nuclear power plants. Complexity varies from low, with a single microcontroller chip, to very high with multiple units, peripherals and networks mounted inside a large chassis or enclosure. In general, "embedded system" is not a hardly definable term, as most systems have some element of extensibility or programmability. e.g., handheld computers share some elements with embedded systems such as an operating system and microprocessors which power them, but they allow different applications to be loaded and peripherals to be connected.
